LOCAL AUTHOR WINS PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AWARD

David beats Goliath, as a Seabeck woman’s self-published book
beats out prominent authors and powerful publishing companies to win
Dog Writers Association of America Writing Competition award.

On February 10, the Grand Ballroom of New York City’s Affinia Hotel hosted the Dog Writers Association of America’s Annual Awards Ceremony. There, the prestigious organization awarded its “Maxwell” medal, the annual prize for Best Breed Book of the Year (2007). Prominent among the nominees were renowned authors and international publishing companies. But a little-known, self-published breeder/author from Seabeck, Washington (pop. 3,328) took home the honors.

With the announcement that Barbara Garnett-Wilson’s The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, in Fact and Fancy had upset the major players, the English-born author was as floored as anyone. As she related in her still-obvious English accent, “All I heard was and the winner is: Barbara…. After that, the rest of the evening is mostly blank! I mean, we are just a little mom-and-pop operation working out of a converted bedroom of our house. So, to be judged worthy of this honor, by some of the best writers in the nation, is absolutely thrilling.”

Designed by Nancy Kinnear of Renton, the nearly 300-page, full-color book, with more than 450 photos and illustrations, has also received raves from major reviewers. One example, the highly respected magazine Dog News, described the book as “masterful,” “incredibly beautiful,” and “a superb breed tome of mind-boggling quality, beautifully published and presented.”

The author’s first book, The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in North America, sold out quickly and is now considered a collectors’ item. In addition to The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, in Fact and Fancy, Barbara has written, along with her husband Roy, a third book, The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: A Tribute in Art.

A breeder, exhibitor, and breed-specialty judge, the author lives with her husband and their Cavaliers of all ages, on picturesque Hood Canal in Washington State.
